Resident Assistant (RA)

(part-time student position)

Department: Residence Life

Reporting to: Residence Life Management Team

End Date: May 1, 2025

Expected hours: Average 16 hours/week

Salary (dependent on start date): $10,140.00 (before Employment Insurance, CSST deductions and pension deductions)

Benefits:

  • The Activity Fund is not charged to members of the Residence Life Team ($75.00)
  • The residence Service Fee is not charged to members of the Residence Life Team ($504.00)
  • All RAs are entitled to reimbursement for tutoring to a maximum of $125.00/year.

Nature of duties and responsibilities

A Resident Assistant plays a vital role in fostering a positive and supportive living environment in university residences. Their duties and responsibilities typically include:

Mentoring and Support:

  • Serve as a resource and mentor for residents, helping them adjust to university life and navigate academic and personal challenges.
  • Provide emotional support and be a listening ear for residents facing personal issues.
  • Set a positive example for residents in terms of behavior, academic commitment, and responsible decision-making.

Community Building:

  • Plan and organize events and activities to build a sense of community among residents.
  • Foster a friendly and inclusive atmosphere within the residence hall.

Conflict Resolution:

  • Mediate conflicts between residents, encouraging open and constructive communication to resolve issues.
  • Address policy violations and enforce university residence rules when necessary.

Safety and Security:

  • Conduct duty rounds to ensure the safety and security of residents.

Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain records of incidents and interactions with residents.

Communication:

  • Serve as a liaison between residents and the Residence Life Management Team
  • Keep residents informed about Community Living Standards, important university policies and events.

Crisis Response:

  • Be prepared to respond to various crisis situations, such as mental health concerns or emergencies.
  • Know how to connect residents with appropriate support services.

Training and Development:

  • Participate in RA training programs to learn about policies, procedures, and resources.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to improve leadership and interpersonal skills.

Promoting Inclusivity:

  • Encourage a diverse and inclusive living environment, respecting and celebrating different backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Address issues of discrimination or harassment.

Job Requirements

  • Candidates need to be registered students at Bishop’s, preferably having completed one year of university studies prior to beginning in the RA role;
  • Must have a minimum average of 65% (most recent unofficial transcript). Under exceptional circumstances, the Residence Life Management Team will consider applicants who do not meet this requirement;
  • Excellent study habits, time management skills, organization, goal setting, problem solving and multitasking skills;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including flexibility, and ability to work well as part of a team;
  • Sound understanding of group dynamics and factors affecting university student’s success;
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, take initiative and be creative;
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage stress;
  • Cross-cultural communication skills and openness and understanding of diversity;
  • Previous leadership experience would be an asset.
